Supplementary Cementitious Materials in Concrete

The utilization of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) like Fly Ash, Slag (GGBS), Metakaolin, and Condensed Silica Fumes in concrete has become increasingly prevalent in contemporary construction practices.

The training session will delve into the manufacturing processes and essential characteristics of these three SCMs, considering Indian standards as a reference point. The module will explain the mechanism of concrete hydration when incorporating these materials, alongside their impact on various concrete properties.

This encompasses aspects like workability, setting time, bleeding, settlement, slump loss, formwork pressure, and heat generation, especially in the context of mass concrete applications. Additionally, the training will encompass how these SCMs contribute to enhancing concrete’s resilience against factors like carbonation, chloride attacks, sulfate attacks, and Alkali-silica reactions.

This comprehensive coverage will provide participants with a holistic understanding of how SCMs influence concrete properties and performance.
